Ten things I’ve learned from never smoking marijuana

  1. Some things are so common, that people cannot understand why you have never done them. Most people have at least tried weed, even if they don’t smoke it regularly.
  2. Different drugs make people annoying in different ways. Ecstasy makes people hug you when they are sweaty. Cocaine makes people talk at you quickly and energetically. Alcohol makes people jabber incoherently. Weed makes people giggle, act paranoid, confused, hungry, or tired.
  3. I think you can get a bit high by osmosis. If you hang out in a room with people and the room is hotboxed, then you start to feel woozy.
  4. You can support something you don’t actively participate in. I support gay marriage, for example. I also believe that criminalizing drug users is harsh and punitive and ultimately ineffective. Particularly when it comes to relatively harmless drugs like marijuana.
  5. I know marijuana is less  harmful than cigarettes, but that doesn’t make it healthy. Don’t act like you are Hal Johnson or Joanne McCleod just because you smoke joints.
  6. Reggae. The perfect music for smoking weed.
  7. In Vancouver, cops smoke joints. Everybody smokes weed. If you come from somewhere else to go to school in Vancouver, it’s almost unbelievable that you would never have smoked. So unbelievable, that my own mother did not believe me when I told her that I’ve never tried marijuana.
  8. When you are in a concert, and somebody lights a joint, everybody does the same thing; they say “hey, I think somebody’s smoking a joint!” And then start frantically looking around to see where the smell is coming from, like it’s some important mystery that needs to be solved.
  9. Some chronic smokers get really upset when small things happen. Like if somebody is high and can’t find their keys, it really makes them anxious.
  10. What other drug can you bake into cookies?

It is an important mystery that needs to be solved. You need to find out who has the joint so that you can sidle into the rotation!
